About

Based on an in-deep study of two Portuguese audio tape collections, PreservArt will correlate carrier material, mechanical issues, audio quality, chemical degradation, and microbiological contamination, and will consolidate terminology and existing SWO while proposing an effective and scalable relational database. PreservArt will develop an innovative diagnostic and documentation tool to assist professionals in historical audio preservation.

What we lose is not just a tape — it's memory, identity, and the ability to listen to who we were.

The problem

Magnetic audio tapes are rapidly deteriorating. Portugal lacks coordinated public policies, scientific documentation, and technical standards to address their chemical and microbiological degradation. Most collections remain scattered, undocumented, and stored in inadequate conditions, with very limited access and high risk of irreversible loss. PreservArt addresses this urgent preservation gap by combining laboratory research with field practice, documentation tools, and knowledge transfer strategies.

Team

PreservArt is powered by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, conservators, and specialists from leading Portuguese institutions. Together, we bring expertise in musicology, chemistry, linguistics, digital humanities, and heritage science.

What is deteriorating is not only magnetic tape — it is cultural memory, artistic legacy, and historical voice.
